A short film titled Kamali about an Indian mother and her skateboarder daughter based in Mahaballiburam has won the best documentary award at the Atlanta film festival. The film by London-based filmmaker Sasha Rainbow is about the single mother who sells fish while nurturing her daughter to be a skateboarder, fighting all odds including the family and their community. The nine-year-old girl Kamali is the only girl in the town pursuing skateboard, a predominantly male sport. The film qualifies for the 2020 Oscar shortlist, raising hopes of an Oscar for yet another Indian story. VANS, an international brand associated with skateboarding, has also made Kamali their ambassador. They are flying the class five girl to Shanghai to participate in an international skateboarders meet. Kamali and her mother Suganthi talk to NDTV about their dreams and challenges.
